Unit Two Mariology in England in the Nineteenth Century
This unit explores the Marian themes and debates that occurred within
Nineteenth century England. Debate over the place of Mary was an issue between the churches, and was heightened by the distinction between the Mariology of the Tractarians, the "new" converts to the faith
and the hope of a more ecumenical dialogue. Newman and Faber were key figures on the Catholic dimensions of Mary - and their views were in opposition. Pusey, on the part of the Tractarians, played an important part
in the context of the debate. Overarching all was the growth of an ultramontanist church.
The readings in this unit - when combined with those of the previous units -
provide you with a background and insight into the Mariological views held within the English church of the nineteenth century.

Potter's own writings. It asks that you look at given texts of the founder, and in relation to other readings, come to understand the roots and
foundations of Mary Potter's own Mariological stance, and of her contribution to the Mariological developments of the nineteenth century.
Please note, the hyperlinks to Mary Potter's writings will take you out
