Introduction

From the second quarter of the 20th Century  there was an increasing interest in what was called “resourcement”. It was a movement (explained in the first reading) which sought to “return to the sources” of the Christian tradition. Emerging strongly between the 1930’s and 1950’s it began a transition that would culminate in the Second Vatican Council.

At the same time as intellectual movements were drawing the church to a new appreciation of its sources, new forms of apostolic action were emerging. The mother of Jesus proved the stimulus and the catalyst for much of this activity and social action. Catherine de Hueck Doherty began Madonna House and found a new perspective on Mary that framed her work and vision.Dorothy Day’s devotion and love of Mary permeated her work and writings. On a more apocalyptic front, the Blue Army, built upon the message of Fatima spread throughout the 1940’s and 50’s and continues to this day. This unit explores the threads that were challenging the church to look again at devotion to Mary - a challenge which led to the “new” mariology of Vatican II.
